It is the driving force behind two of the world’s best-known material brands – Lucite® and Perspex®. Challenge At Lucite international’s manufacturing site in Darwen, Lancashire, the demands of utilities and security services are rigorous. By 2006, seven separate service providers with more than 120 contractors were employed on site. A key strategic objective was set out to steer a scaling down process – to reduce service providers and contractors, improve efficiencies, whilst retaining a focus on high safety and performance standards and the ability to adapt were a necessity. There also seemed to be a comfort with selecting only the biggest suppliers, a trend formed from Lucite International’s earlier days as part of the ICI group. But having established its own identity and a new culture emerging, the company was eager to consider a more open approach – ensuring that the right service provider was selected, one that would offer the flexibility to take on more services as needed. Solution AM Support Services was one of those existing seven service providers. As the youngest business included in the bid it was delighted to win the formal tender process, having successfully demonstrated its flexible approach and ability listen to the exact nature of the brief. The contract began with cleaning, security and PAT Testing, and has developed to now include gardening, manufacturing support, forklift truck battery maintenance, bin emptying and specialist ‘bogie studding’ services. A full-time team leader was also appointed, responsible for auditing safety and quality targets, a range of key performance indicators, and to deal with other day-to-day issues.
